Cubs is a lot of fun. Between September-June each year Cubs get to do (and learn) things they normally wouldn’t have the chance to. Along the way they meet friends, develop new skills, gain confidence and get leadership opportunities!
Joining Cubs is straightforward – parents have to register youth. But youth also have to learn about Cubs!

The Cub respects the old wolf,
The Cub respects him/herself!
The Grand Howl is a special way of saying ‘hello’ or “good bye” to the leaders and fellow Cubs, it is performed at beginning and end of meetings. Cubs squat down with their hands on floor in-front of them. This is like the wolves do in The Jungle Book story, when they are at Council Rock.
Cubs: “Ah-kay-la! We-e-e-e-ll do-o-o-o o-o-o-u-u-r BEST!” On the word “BEST”, the Cubs jump to their feet with two fingers of each hand at the sides of their heads, to resemble a wolf’s ears.
Duty Cub:“Dyb – dyb – dyb -dyb” The word “dyb” means “Do Your Best”.
On the fourth “dyb”, the Cubs lower their left hands and the fingers of their right hands extend to form the Wolf Cub salute.
Cubs: “We-e-e-e-ll dob-dob-dob-dob”, meaning “We’ll do our best”.
The two fingers represent the wolf’s ears.
The two fingers stand for the two parts of the Cub Scout Promise: “to help other people” and “to obey.”
They look like a wolf’s ears ready to listen to Akela.
When to use: Give the Cub Scout sign when you say the “Cub Scout Promise” and the “Law of the Pack” or when Akela raises the sign to ask for silence.
In Cubs, we use our left hand to do the Cub Scout handshake! This comes to us from the Ashanti warriors whom Lord Baden-Powell, the founder of Scouting, knew many years ago in West Africa.
He saluted them with his right hand, but the Ashanti chiefs offered their left hands and said, “In our land only the bravest of the brave shake hands with the left hand, because to do so we must drop our shields and our shields and our protection.” The Ashanti knew of Baden-Powell’s bravery for they had fought against him and with him, and were proud to offer him the left hand of bravery.
How: Put your first two fingers along the inside of the other Cub’s wrist.
Why: The Cub handshake means that you “help” and that you “obey” the Law of the Wold Cub Pack.
The Cub Scout salute is made by joining the index and middle fingers of the right hand (holding the other fingers with the thumb) and touching them to the cap visor or forehead above the right eyebrow. The hand is held the same as for the Cub Scout sign, except the index and middle fingers are together.
There is a fee for participating in Cubs. This helps Scouts Canada and 26th Halifax create the Cubs program, which is run entirely by volunteers!
If you are unable to pay the fee, we don’t want your prospective Cub to miss out on the chance to be a part of 26th Halifax. There is a subsidy program called No One Left Behind that is administered by Scouts Canada. It offsets the cost to youth and their families of participating in Scouting activities. Examples include the cost of purchasing uniforms, program materials, outdoor equipment and camp fees. We want all youth who are interested to be able to participate and enjoy the Cub Scouts program!
