Hi Cubs families,
This week we are meeting for a hike on the new Long Lake Trail. We will meet at the parking/trail and access point, accessible off of Northwest Arm Dr. (View long-lake-trail-hike map).
Families are welcome!
Agenda:
6:30 pm – Drop off/meet at the access point parking lot (view Google map), go over safety and ground rules.
6:35 pm sharp – Hike starts
During hike:
- The loop is 5 kms, which is too long for us, but we will follow the trail south of Witherod Lake (view long-lake-trail-hike map) and go as far as time permits
- Map reading – reintroduce them to map reading – understanding spatial views, using a compass, distance on a map, topographical maps.
- Set way points they have to ID on the map. At each waypoint, list things to look for – a scavenger hunt; I will look into the new Canadian path info to see what it can inspire in regards to natural features, flora, fauna.
- Review some of the things we learned last year about stars (big dipper, how to find the north star, etc.)
7:55 – Pickup at same lot as drop off, take group photo.
What to bring:
- Bring good walking shoes
- Bring a flashlight
- Bring a compass
- Bring water (and a snack if needed) in a backpack
- Dress for the weather – Wed, 21 Sep – A mix of sun and cloud. High 23. Night – Clear. Low 13.

PS – There’s homework: Akela gave the Cubs homework last week. Each Cub should come with one idea for an activity or outing they want to do this year! Please make sure your Cub has a constructive idea of their own to contribute!
